I hold a BSc (2011) and an MSc (2013) in Biochemistry from the University of Porto. My MSc thesis integrated medicinal chemistry and biochemistry, focusing on developing mitochondria-targeted antioxidants for treating oxidative stress-related pathologies. Before pursuing a PhD, I worked as an R&D assistant at MA Silva & Cork in 2015, where I utilized a portable electronic nose to address cork quality control issues related to odor complaints. Additionally, I developed crystallography skills under the mentorship of Luis Gales at ICBAS-UP, working on a project aimed at mitigating paraquat toxicity. I was awarded research fellowships to explore new therapies for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and undertook a PhD in Biomedicine and Experimental Biology under Paulo Oliveira at the University of Coimbra. My PhD research involved validating a novel mitochondria-targeted antioxidant for NAFLD and elucidating its cellular mechanism. In 2022, my PhD thesis was recognized as one of the top five at UC for its excellence. In 2019, I gained international experience by spending several months at CLADE in Esslingen, Germany, as part of a European collaboration to develop non-invasive profiling of mitochondrial function in NAFLD using infrared spectroscopy. Following my PhD, I secured a postdoctoral position at ICBR-UC, where I explored the therapeutic potential of medicinal plants for NAFLD and conducted a proof-of-concept study on mitochondria-targeted polyphenols for NAFLD treatment. This role enhanced my project management and team leadership skills. In July 2023, I transitioned to cancer research by joining the Expression Regulation in Cancer group at i3S in Porto as a Junior Researcher. I am currently engaged in a project focusing on the clinical and financial management of hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC) within the framework of the i3S-coordinated European consortium PREVENTABLE. Throughout my career, I have participated in 11 funded research projects and published 17 papers and a book chapter in international peer-reviewed journals, with eight as first or second author. I have presented 11 oral and 14 poster presentations at national and international meetings, earning one best talk and four best poster awards, along with six travel grants. I have collaborated with leading experts in oxidative stress (Mariusz R. Wieckowski, Poland), mitochondrial biology (Hans Zischka, Germany), medicinal chemistry (Fernanda Borges, Porto), and lipid metabolism (D. John Jones, Coimbra). My involvement in the CLADE lab in Germany facilitated innovative research utilizing infrared spectroscopy for analyzing NAFLD patients' plasma profiles. I have also actively contributed to science dissemination, serving on the organizing committees of three scientific conferences, co-supervising three MSc theses, four bachelor student internships, and three visiting students. Additionally, I have been invited to peer-review for several scientific journals and have participated in outreach activities through CNC's educational programs. My goal is to continue performing competitive research at the highest level and transition into an independent researcher position within the next six years.
