André Paixão is an Assistant Researcher at the Transportation Department of the Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil (LNEC), Lisbon. He holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Porto (FEUP, 2014), focused on the structural behaviour of railway track transition zones, and a degree in Civil Engineering (Structural Engineering) from Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon (2006). His research centres on transport infrastructure engineering, with emphasis on the performance and resilience of railway track systems. He has expertise in physical and numerical modelling, laboratory testing and characterisation of geomaterials, field instrumentation and monitoring, and data-driven assessment of asset condition. His current interests include innovative and sustainable track superstructure solutions, ballast and transition zone behaviour, geometric quality and degradation mechanisms, remote sensing for infrastructure monitoring, and infrastructure asset management. Dr Paixão has contributed to numerous national and international R&D projects and has published more than 25 peer-reviewed journal articles, over 60 conference papers, and 100 technical reports (h-index 19, October 2025). He has supervised and co-supervised more than ten postgraduate students, serves as a regular peer-reviewer and is a member of editorial boards and technical committees in his field. He received both PhD and Postdoctoral fellowships from FCT, and his PhD research was distinguished with the Prémio Professor Doutor Joaquim Sarmento (2014) and LNEC’s Prémio Manuel Rocha.
