My name is João Gabriel Silva. I'm currently a PhD Fellow at Doctoral Program of Experimental Biology and Biomedicine at the Institute of Interdisciplinary Research at University of Coimbra, supported by a grant from Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia. My project focuses on working with a zebrafish model for hepatic fluxes in diet-induced NAFLD context, hosted by Center of Neurosciences and Cell Biology at University of Coimbra, CICECO at University of Aveiro, and CIVG at Escola Universitária Vasco da Gama in Coimbra. I have a BSc in Biology in 2019 (final classification of 17) and a MSc in Cellular and Molecular Biology in 2021 (final classification of 19), both by University of Coimbra. My thesis was titled "The Effects Of High Fat Feeding On The Metabolomics Of Heart, Kidney And Skeletal Muscle In C57BL6J Mice As Analysed By 1H NMR", supervised by Doctor Ludgero Tavares, Professor Ana Gil and Professor Rui Carvalho, and an article as a main author is being prepared from this work. Currently I have 4 articles published in international journals, accumulating 28 citations in the past 3 years, and 4 participations in a international and national conferences posters, one awarded the 3rd Best Poster and another with an Honourable Mention. Additionally, I have been awarded with the prize "3% Best Students" in 2017 and" Merit Board" in 2018, both at University of Coimbra, as well as multiple honour awards in basic and high-school. During my time at University of Coimbra, I was a Collaborator (2016-2018) and then the Coordinator (2018-2020) of Scientific Formation and Professional Goals at the Nuclei of Biology Students of the Academic Association of Coimbra, organizing several scientific events within the Student Association and the Research Centres of the Universities. Furthermore, I was also a participant in different workshops, courses, meetings and conferences, as well as a volunteer in different organizations. My current research interests focus on Metabolism, Metabolomics and Big Data tools to better understand and characterise diseases such as the Metabolic Syndrome, Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Diabetes, employing Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Stable Isotope Tracers, and Multivariate Analyse Tools. During my (still short) academic experience I had different learning periods: a summer internship in Escola Superior Agrária, working in horses reproduction; a long term internship in the Metabolic Control Center in the Center of Neurosciences and Cell Biology in Coimbra, studying fish and mice metabolism; and more recently, I secured a position as a fellowship researcher at the Metabolomics Lab in CICECO-Aveiro, in the project "The role of extrahepatic fructose metabolism in the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease", acquiring and analysing NMR data from mice with different energetic diets. From my past research work, I have experience techniques such as NMR Spectroscopy, stable isotope labelling, HPLC and sample processing in extraction and purification of mice tissues (tissue homogenizers, liquid nitrogen grinding, freeze-drying, MTBE and Folch extractions, solid phase extractions for triglycerides). Additionally, I had contact with statistical tools in Multivariate Analysis (PCA, PLS-DA and OPLS-DA), and well as software such as Python, R, GraphPad Prism, Excel, MATLAB, SIMCA, and NMR tools (TopSpin, Amix and Chenomx).
