MJS earned her PhD in 2016 (IST, Lisbon), specializing in membrane biophysics. Her research focused on unravelling the organization of PIP2 phosphoinositol in both membrane mimetics and live cell membranes. During her PhD, she spent two months at King's College London (UK), conducting time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy imaging, a technique she later implemented in her home laboratory. Post-PhD, she ventured to IIT in Genoa (Italy) for her initial PostDoc (2016-2017), employing STED-based approaches to visualize nuclear structures in acute promyelocytic leukaemia. Subsequently, she joined the Heyrovský Institute in Prague (Czech Republic) delving into single-molecule fluorescence microscopy and spectroscopy to decipher the protective role of gangliosides against membrane-mediated oligomerization of amyloidogenic proteins implicated in neurodegenerative diseases. In 2019, MJS received both the CEECind (FCT) and a Marie Curie fellowship to investigate the molecular determinants of healthy human aging. Returning to Lisbon in June 2020, she joined iMM where she currently explores lipid-lamin interactions in the nuclear compartment and their impact on nuclear structural integrity during premature and physiological aging. This includes working with both model systems and primary cells, and implementing different approaches in the host lab, such as nuclei isolation, lamin purification and lipidomics. With more than 10 years of experience, MJS now possesses advanced expertise in quantitative biophysical approaches, including several optical microscopy techniques (confocal, FRET, FLIM, FCS, FAIM, STED) and steady-state/time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. Her skills extend, for example, from vesicle preparation and lipid biochemistry to live cell handling. She plays an active role in mentoring students and fostering national and international collaborations. Additionally, she has been contributing to the Young Researchers and Innovators committee within COST Action EpiLipidNET (focused on lipidomics analysis) since 2021. She has authored numerous publications in esteemed journals, such as Nature Communications, Chemical Reviews, Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences, Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters and Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, often serving as the first and/or corresponding author.
