Daniel Chavarria obtained his BSc (2012) and MSc (2014) in Biochemistry from the Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto (FCUP, Portugal), and a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences (2020) from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto (FFUP, Portugal). His PhD was labeled as European Doctorate, and his PhD Thesis received an award of excellence from the Paul Ehrlich MedChem Euro-PhD in Medicinal Chemistry. During his PhD, Daniel developed projects in drug discovery at CIQUP-IMS/FCUP (Portugal), CNC-UC (Portugal), and UCIBIO (Portugal). Part of his PhD was performed at USC (Spain) under the supervision of Prof. Eugenio Uriarte. As a post-doc researcher, he also performed 2 secondments: one at Mediagnost GmbH (Germany), funded by project H2020-MSCA-RISE-2016-734719 and supervised by Dr Andrea Normann, and the other at the University of Montpellier (France), funded by project MitoTARGET4AD (2022.15117.CBM) and supervised by Prof Tangui Maurice. Daniel is currently a post-doc researcher at CIQUP-IMS. His current research interests fall within the area of CNS drug discovery. In particular, he aims to develop new drug candidates able to regulate pathophysiological processes associated with neurodegenerative diseases, namely chronic neuroinflammation, oxidative and nitrosative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, ferroptosis, and neurotransmitter depletion. Daniel Chavarria was the principal investigator (PI) of project NOXIOUS (EXPL/BIA-BQM/0492/2021, 18 months, 50K). This exploratory project, focused on the development of targeted covalent inhibitors to unravel NOX2 crystal structure, counted with the collaboration of Prof. Andrea Mattevi (UniPV, Italy). He is also Co-PI of project DeFend (2022.04633.PTDC, 18 months, 50K), which aims at developing mitochondria-targeted iron chelators to treat Friedreich's Ataxia. Project DeFend is being performed in collaboration with Dr. António Currais (Salk institute, USA). Since the beginning of his scientific career, Daniel authored 32 peer-reviewed scientific publications in international high impact factor journals (12 as first author; 1 as corresponding author), some of which were published with collaborations from Italy, Spain, France, and Germany (h index ~12). He attended 18 national and international scientific meetings that resulted in 18 oral communications (7 as first author), 49 conference posters (16 as first author, 4 as last author), 3 conference abstracts, and 4 international scientific awards for best communications. He also attended 3 workshops and 2 training schools within the area of drug discovery and was actively involved in the organization of 4 international science dissemination activities (scientific meetings, workshops) and one course in Medicinal Chemistry. He was integrated in 20 research projects from national (FCT, NORTE2020) and European (FEDER) agencies. He is/was also the reviewer of research manuscripts (e.g.: RSC Medicinal Chemistry, Scientific Reports, Expert Opinion on Drug Discovery) and the guest editor of 2 special issues (Molecules). Finally, in addition to research, Daniel Chavarria is involved in teaching activities at FCUP, supervision/tutoring of national PhD (2), MSc (3) and BSc students (5), BSc/MSC fellows (2), mentoring of international Post-doc researchers (1), PhD (2) and MSc students (2), and in public exams of students (6).
